Rumor: Google MP3 store in the works

Google is allegedly planning on opening its own MP3 store to go along with its Google Music Beta service. According to the New York Times, Google would like to have the store open within several weeks. An official announcement could be made even sooner than that depending on how negotiations go between Google and music labels. One of the label’s main concerns is the potential of piracy. Google has to gain their confidence on this issue before moving forward.

It’s believed Google’s MP3 store would be launched in response to iTunes and the Amazon MP3 store. Both Apple and Amazon have devices that are directly tied in to their digital stores. With the Kindle Fire, Amazon is shying away from Google services in favor of its own appstore, video store and MP3 store. Google is the only would-be competitor that doesn’t currently sell music.

If the Google MP3 store actually launches, it’s likely that music purchased from the store will be accessible from Google Music Beta. Once it’s in the cloud, users will be able to listen to their music anywhere they have a connection to Google Music Beta.
